Gallery 2: Keating Channel
The Keating Channel was created in 1912 to serve as the rather ignominious outlet of the Don River into Lake Ontario. The channel silts up quickly and needs frequent dredging, and this dredging barge sits there at all times for the purpose. The rest of the area is very industrial with oil storage tanks serving great lakes tankers, abandoned grain silos, a large ready-mix plant complex and numerous other smaller industries. It is also home to the Toronto Harbour Commissions service facility, and just about the only place left in Toronto where you can see tugboats. Pictured above is the dredging barge. In the background are the pylons of the Gardiner Expressway.
